Weactively engage the community through various ways. In the past we have conducted science outreach activities at schools and orphanages or invite students from schools to visit us at INFORMM and USM. Additionally we also perform other social responsibility activities that include assisting welfare homes and the less fortunate through financial or other forms of contributions.
As an example we conducted the 'Science Made Fun' activity at a school in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.
Science Made Fun III
On 20th October 2015, INFORMM, in collaboration with the District Education Office (DEO) of Pasir Mas, once again organised the annual program; “Science Made Fun III” at SK Lemal, Pasir Mas. With the aim to nurture the curiosity and interest in Science among primary school children, this one-day event involved 120 students from standard 5 and 6. The programme started with the opening remarks by the headmaster of SK Lemal, Tuan Hj. Zakaria bin Sulaiman and was officiated by the DEO of Pasir Mas, Tuan Hj. Norazman bin Wan Hassan. A representative from INFORMM, Dr. Khairul Mohd Fadzli Mustaffa, gave an introduction about INFORMM and a brief scientific talk about the programme.
Fun and interesting experiments such as Home-Made Ice-Cream, The Colour Symphony, Giant Toothpaste, Volatile Volcano, an Introduction to Micropipette, Chromatography Paper, Lava Lamps and Jet Balloons were guided and demonstrated by facilitators. The students were divided into 16 groups separated into two teams, which allows them to take turns in experiencing all hands-on experiments. A question and answer session was conducted to assess the student’s understanding about theory behind all the scientific experiments that they have performed earlier.
The event, which was well-received by the students and the teachers, was closed by a sharing session. The students were given a chance to express their opinions and thoughts on the scientific activities. They also shared their new experiences and hoped that this programme will be organised again in future. As a closing remark, a group photo session was taken by the organizers at the end of the programme.
